AVID CAN HELP direct your path.
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program whose primarily goal is to prepare you to be successful in college. Through an application process, students are selected for the AVID program. Once selected, they are enrolled in the AVID course. For one class period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical-thinking, both ask and get answers to probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. This class is not a study hall, but rather an academic class that teaches study skills that can be used throughout the day in more traditional academic arenas. Additionally, students accepted in the AVID program are typically required to enroll in at least one of their school's toughest classes, such as honors or Advanced Placement®, in addition to the AVID elective. As students progress in AVID, their self-image improves, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students. While the AVID curriculum provides the basis for success, the individual determination of the student sets the path for future success.
